The Lena's Mining Railway was built with the main purpose of
transporting coal from the Barrojeira and Bezerra mines to the main State
railway network at Martingança Station (West Line). Operation began in 1924
between Martingança and Batalha stations with a gauge of 60cm. In 1928 the gauge
was changed to 1m and at that time the traction of trains began to be assured by
the great nr.10 SKODA 2-8-2 steam locomotive.
> Lena's Railway continued to haul coal trains until 1938/39, when it begun it's demise. In 1941 the SKODA locomotives were sold to Ferrocarril de la Robla in Spain. The remaining rolling stock - wagons and passenger coaches were transferred to CP - Portuguese State Railways - for service in the meter gauge lines.
